UK Detective Agency Uncovers Sophisticated Email-Based Fraud Targeting Small Business

UK Detective Agency (UKDA Ltd), a specialist private investigation agency, has successfully identified the cause of a complex financial fraud case involving a small UK business and a £50,000 misdirected payment.

The incident began when the small business transferred £50,000 to what they believed was a legitimate client account. When the client confirmed they had not received the funds, the business raised concerns about potential internal theft and reached out to UKDA Ltd to investigate.

UKDA’s expert detectives quickly launched a thorough investigation on the clients behalf. Their findings revealed that the email account of one employee had been compromised by cybercriminals. Fraudsters had intercepted internal communications and manipulated payment details, resulting in the funds being diverted to a fraudulent account, not to the intended recipient.

Importantly, UKDA was able to confirm that the issue was not the result of internal theft, providing reassurance to the business and its staff. The detectives identified a ‘man in the middle attack’, the fraudster had made subtle changes in email addresses to take the funds intended for the clients payment.

UKDA has since advised the company on essential next steps, including strengthening email and IT security systems, enhancing internal protocols, and delivering targeted staff training to recognise and prevent phishing and scam emails. The agency continues to support the business with ongoing fraud prevention strategies.

“We’re proud to have helped our client quickly get to the bottom of the issue and reassure them that this wasn’t a case of internal wrongdoing. It has been a pleasure to assist them with safeguarding strategies to prevent a similar attack in the future,” said one of the detectives working on the case. “This investigation highlights how even small businesses can be targeted by highly sophisticated cyber fraud, and why proactive investigation and prevention are vital.”

What Is a ‘Man In the Middle Attack’?

A man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack is a type of cyberattack where criminals secretly place themselves between people who are communicating online. They do this by taking advantage of weak internet security to steal information. The individuals communicating by email, text, or video call usually don’t know that a criminal is listening in and taking their data to use to their advantage.

Most cyberattacks are quiet and go unnoticed. But some MitM attacks are more direct. For example, a bot might send fake text messages, copy someone’s voice on a call, or even fake an entire messaging system to gather data from people’s devices.

Warning signs of Man-In-The-Middle Attacks could include:

  1. Connection & Security Warnings: Such as secure sites showing HTTP instead of HTTPS or unexpected changes in website security certificates.

  1. Unusual Network Behavior: Including use of public or open Wi-Fi networks, frequent lag during online activity or being consistently disconnected, and unexpected redirects to unfamiliar websites or login pages.

  1. Suspicious Communication: Be cautious of odd or slightly altered texts, emails, or calls from known contacts, as well as missing, delayed, or duplicated messages. You may also notice duplicate logins or unexpected session activity on personal or work accounts.

  1. Device or App Issues: Warning signs could include pop-ups or warnings from antivirus or security apps, sudden app crashes during communication with another individual, and noticeable device slowdown whilst using the internet.

  1. Strange Account Activity: Be mindful of being unexpectedly logged out from services or apps, notification of login attempts from unknown or foreign locations as well as unexplained changes to account settings or preferences.
